The crystal structure analysis of various polymer substances has been reviewed on the basis of wide-angle high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

Dynamics of soft matter studied by neutron spin echo technique

Endo, Hitoshi

Kobunshi, 60(4), p.193 - 194, 2011/04

Neutron spin echo (NSE) technique is a quite unique and advanced method to study soft matter dynamics. In this manuscript, NSE technique and its applications are briefly reviewed. Then, the Japanese NSE spectrometer iNSE is overviewed. At the end, the future prospects of NSE in Japan are described.

Dynamics of biomolecules studied by neutron inelastic scattering

Nakagawa, Hiroshi; Kataoka, Mikio

Kobunshi, 60(4), p.195 - 196, 2011/04

Protein is a biomolecule with a regular tertiary structure. The protein functions biologically by conformational change under the thermal fluctuation. Experimentally obtained neutron has a wavelength of a few angstrom and an energy of a few meV, which correspond to the distance between atoms in the molecule and an energy of the thermal fluctuation, respectively. Therefore, the neutron is useful for the determination of molecular structure by diffraction and the observation of functional protein dynamics and hydration water dynamics with pico-nano second time scale. J-PARC, new pulse neutron source at Tokai in Ibaraki, started operation. Here, we show our recent work about the dynamics of the biomolecule.

We investigated for the first time the mesoscopic structure of crosslinked-polytetrafluoroethylene (cPTFE) based radiation-grafted polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) by using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation. Based on the molecular structures, the fully-hydrated PEM systems were constructed with the coarse-grained particles representing several atom groups. In the equilibrium state, water appeared to percolate into poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) graft chains to give a mixed phase, separated from the hydrophobic PTFE chains. This phase-separation picture is quite different from that of Nafion, in which only water particles were gathered excluding any polymer parts (a so-called water cluster). In order to obtain a deep insight into the phase-separation structure, the radial distribution function between water particles was calculated. As a result, there were found to be small water clusters with a diameter of only 1.8 nm in the water/grafts mixture regions.

Pectin and triallylisocyanurate (TAIC) were immobilized onto poly(styrene-$$co$$-divinylbenzene) (PSD) beads by irradiating in the range of 2.5 to 25 kGy using $$gamma$$-rays from a $$^{60}$$Co source. The adsorption performance of methyl-2-benzimidazolylcarbamate (MBC) treated with immobilized Pectin- TAIC beads was investigated. Pectin was effective to enhance the MBC uptakes at pH11, in contrast to pH3 for TAIC. The amounts of MBC uptake of immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads were 1.3$$sim$$3.9 times higher than those of PSD beads which were only irradiated without the use of Pectin and TAIC in the range of pH3 to pH11. The cycles of absorption-desorption assays show that the sorption performance of immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads shows excellent reproducibility, suggesting that the immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads are a useful adsorbent for the extraction of MBC from environmental water.

Fibrous metal ion adsorbent synthesized by radiation processing

Tamada, Masao

Kobunshi, 58(6), p.397 - 400, 2009/06

Graft polymerization is a radiation processing which cam impart desired functional group into a trunk polymer. When a nonwoven fabric is selected as the trunk polymer of the graft polymerization, a fibrous metal adsorbent can be synthesized. The resulting fibrous adsorbent realizes extremely high flow rate in the metal ion adsorption. The present paper describes the characteristic of the fibrous adsorbent which can treat the contaminated water 100 times faster than commercialized sphere adsorption resin, removal of cadmium from mid-gut gland of waste from scallop processing, purification of storage water for air-conditioning of building, the recover of uranium from seawater, collection of scandium from hot spring water as the applications to removal of toxic metals and collection of useful metals.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) thin films irradiated with four kinds of ion beams were exposed to a 9 M KOH aqueous solution after their storage in air for 30 or 90 days at different temperatures. According to the conductometry, the heating at 120ºC was found to enhance the etch rate in the latent track without changing that in the bulk, thereby enabling us to obtain very high etching sensitivity for the preparation of nano-sized through-pores. The formation of hydroperoxides during this pretreatment should facilitate the introduction of the etching agent to improve etchability. Additionally, the irradiation of higher-LET ions, causing each track to more activated sites (like radicals), was preferable to achieve high sensitivity of the etching.

Humic acid(HA) was immobilized onto poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzen)(PSD) gel by $$gamma$$-ray irradiation. The absorption of methyl-2-benzimidazolylcarbamate(MBC) on HA-immobilized PSD was investigated. The amount of mBC uptake were found to be 1.4-2.7 times as large as that of PSD without immobilization of HA in the wide pH range of 3 to 11. Even after the absorption-dsorption cycle was repeated ten times, its absorption ability did not change.
